THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

[attr=class,bulk][break]Idle footfalls carry him through a muted world of grayscale, head hung low in quiet reflection. The Borderlands shift around him, posing little in the way of resistance. By dint of his patronage, the way was always clear; wayward, wicked spirits left him well alone. And though this was meant to safeguard him during a more privileged hunt...[break][break]

He spends his time chasing after recollections of her, derelict in his duties. Though he recognizes landmarks, the ephemeral nature of this place leaves him wandering aimlessly, though he is not encumbered by the thought. There is purpose in every step, for they all bring him one step closer to the realization of his greatest wish.[break][break]

Yveltal roams the skyline overhead, leashing itself to where Adrian wanders, but keeping its distance—or perhaps keeping something in check. It is as yet trusting of Adrian's motives, though its patience wears thin with a trainer too headstrong. Too... unwieldy for its needs.[break][break]

Sentiments fill the ranger as his feet carry him behind the Marshadow that leads. Their way is harshened only by natural cliffs and paths unwalked for ages. This shady little sherpa appears to know ways of traversing this place to help them go unseen by it's many denizens. A useful thing in this dreadful landscape.

It isn't until they reach the edge of a shifting plateau that Derek gazes up towards the skyline at last. Though obscured, he can make out the great wings of a familiar creature among the fogged cloud at a distance.

"We're taking a detour!" Such words are met by Marshadow's protest, but it follows suit upon it's ranger making a hasty plunge down the angled cliffside. In time, this unnatural pace fueled by desperation would bring them closer.

[attr=class,bulk][break]There are pawprints littering the soot, though they disappear with the slightest wind as the dust and detritus shift, muddling the path even as he walks it. Through him, Yveltal believes to see the traces of CHIEN-PAO, but Adrian knows better. These tracks belong to her, he's sure of it. A lifetime of following after them makes him certain.[break][break]

Long has he sought her out here, only to be eluded by her time after time. He begins to suspect Yveltal's interference, though he is unwilling to accept it. Arriving at the cliffside of a great plateau, he discovers nothing but another dead end. The tracks lead nowhere, save for down the mountain, but it is a long fall from here... Once again, he may be forced to concede that he searched in vain.[break][break]

There is something else though. He can feel it radiating like an AURA from somewhere behind him—something familiar. And that's when he finally encounters her. His Arcanine, Howitzer, wreathed in the flesh of their mortal coil. Alive. Yet she is reserved in her appearance. She does not approach him anymore than that, as if prepared to flee if he should give chase.[break][break]

From overhead, the wretched daemon Yveltal sees all of this, and is perhaps... outraged. The folly of man always seeking to cheat Death is ever present in Adrian's actions. Though it has waxed over well-meaning, winding speeches, and offered visions of its perfect dream...[break][break]

Adrian has refused it, time and time again. It would not last.

Like feathers descended from Yveltal's decrepit wings, Derek arrives in time to witness the FALLEN that have gathered around Adrian. What resembles an Arcanine, as well as... "Apollo?" It was impossible not to recognize his pokemon, which bore scars resembling the separate deaths endured during it's two chances at life. "Adrian, what's going on here - !!!"

After the events of CYBERCHASE CONUNDRUM, the EXECUTIONER itself finds no true place for DEREK HOFFMAN among the living nor the dead. He is an OTHER, having been "cloned" by the DRK TRIAD.

Impacted by some sense of imminent doom, Derek's gaze shoots to the skies for Yveltal - who he assumes to be the one causing this visceral sensation. "...And why do I feel like something just walked on my grave?!" He didn't even have a grave yet, he was still alive! This shouldn't have anything to do with him, right?[break]

The weight sinking down over his body made the ranger one with the earth. He could barely stay standing, let alone raise one foot after another to continue his way towards the battle that was nigh. At the very least, Derek was able to stave off the sensations overwhelming his gut just enough to avoid vomiting right there.

And so he fumbles over the words, blind to the woosh of black-on-red feathers.[break][break]

It is now Adrian who is rejected, then. The fel creature swings around overhead, gliding low against the ground until it perches itself atop the bluffs, dauntless and imposing as it poised itself for what promised to be another enlightening prevarication.[break][break]

Its cruel visage elicits only silence from him, as the beast doubtlessly ponders what to do with its newest disappointment. Before Adrian can manage some wry comment, it finally makes its thoughts known to those gathered before it:[break][break]

Long have you made it your mission to cheat death for this one. This I can no longer abide. Make your choice, Executioner.[break][break]

An undeniable gravitas hangs over him. Adrian, who might've once thought to mock the creature, or take its fealty for granted, now sits on the precipice. His future irrefutably hinges on this moment, for better or worse. Looking over his shoulder, Adrian finds his longing gaze lingering on his time tested companion, before turning his attention back to Yveltal. The entity unfurls its wings, spreading them wide as if to accept Adrian back into its clutch. But he does not approach it.[break][break]

Its cerulean eyes hold a knowing look, however chilling, before it speaks—[break][break]

Then the virtue of the path is lost on you. Yet know you, Adrian, that I will not suffer this aberration to live again...[break][break]

Taking a step back, Adrian manages a scowl. But before he can speak, Yveltal's outburst overtakes him—He can feel its frustration with every word shared.[break][break]

I thought as much—MAN'S HUBRIS KNOWS NO LIMIT[break][break]

In its eyes Adrian witnesses a pent-up fury that is being unleashed. Surging with a dark aura, Yveltal begins to take wing, but even as it does Adrian can feel himself being drained. In that moment it exhausts Adrian's vessel of the aura it had long since imparted upon him, siphoning the strength of its vassal in one sweeping declaration of intent: He was as good as dead

In that moment, every hair stands on end. Adrian remains frozen in fear of the entity, stunned by its sudden intensity. He would've died, there and then...[break][break]

But Howitzer does not allow this to pass. She intervenes in a blazing streak, challenging Yveltal's path and forcing it to avert its course, shooting for the skysweald. He takes solace in their reunion, placing a hand against her side to ground himself in the moment. Yet the dread creature harries them once more, swinging back around.[break][break]

Yveltal sizes them up as it looms overhead, before drawing on a vast reservoir of power. In that moment Adrian can recognize the signs of its DOOM-DRIVEN DIRGE welling up within, and the sensation of overwhelming doom takes hold. Charged with wicked might, Yveltal races towards them with resolve as yet unbridled...[break][break]

BEGONE NOW ADRIAN, CHILD OF MAN—AND KNOW THEN THE ABSOLUTION OF DEATH...!!![break][break]

Adrian reached for Furor's pokeball, hoping to muster a defense even as the lights in his eyes were drowned out in violent cimmerian. He felt almost... weightless.[break][break]

How'd they keep meeting like this? Of all the dangers this place could offer, Derek would've never imagined a scene quite like this. And yet, all things considered, there was a distinct feeling that Adrian deserved everything that came to pass. Even if the ranger was missing a few pages from whatever story was at play.

Yet empathy for his enemy hadn't gone extinct, as Derek witnesses the spectral figure of an Arcanine he could only assume belonged to Adrian during it's lifetime. Why else would it come to his defense against such a creature? Even the Marshadow at his side cowered into it's shadows when the doom-driven Yveltal began wielding it's abhorrent strength.

Such resolve didn't stem from nothing. Derek could only hope to witness more, as their duel continued to lay ruin to this space between life and afterlife.

Adrian felt briefly the rattle of his bones, the numbing, gnawing anguish of detritus cramming beneath his nails as he clawed, struggling to find a foothold, and the bite of road burn as his body was blasted away towards the cliff's edge.[break][break]

He felt gravity tugging at him as he slipped over the precipice, managing a panicked stare over the bluffs before his body went slack, his strength failing him then. Where he might've momentarily stared at them, stunned and petrified, he could now only see that souless skysweald above as his limp body plummeted into the dark below...[break][break]

Fists of rock jutting out from the bluffs ravage Adrian's body as he tumbles towards journey's end. From the summit, Yveltal leaves them to their misery, satisfied with the plume of smoke and the presumed cadavers that lie smote upon the ground therein...[break][break]

...But from out of that billowing cloud of soot and cinder erupted Howitzer, not so fortunate to have been spared, but endeavoring still to safeguard its trainer. With unmatched speed and the grace of a seraph, she raced down along the mountain ahead of the rising mudslide, pebbles and stones pelting the ground from the tumult.[break][break]

Adrian could not have hoped to see more than a roiling image of the sky and earth rolling around him as his doomed descent gained momentum. He couldn't count the moments between impacts, or the myriad bruises or breaks—he could only grunt from torment as he was mashed against earth and stone. It would end this way, he realized.[break][break]

THE FALL WOULD BREAK HIM

Shooting pains are dulled as they come crashing to a halt. His body lies still where he bleeds out, save for the rise of his lungs as Adrian labors for every ragged breath. Yveltal had its pound of flesh. He could feel himself drifting in and out of consciousness, only to reel in agony for a time, and then fade... Nnnh—...n-no, not... yet, I—I can... still—!![break][break]

Eyelids tremble as they parted, smeared with dust and wet with gore, revealing a blurred silhouette against which his frame rested...[break][break]

Only as the dust settled would he manage to catch a glimpse...[break]

It was quite a tumble down that cliffside, which said nothing of the injuries taking place before the fall. Reluctant to draw attention to himself, Derek hesitates to follow - only growing curious when the second wraith chases down after Adrian's assumed corpse. Why Apollo showed any concern, he didn't know.

But as the dust settles, it becomes clear that Yveltal feels it's work here is finished. When he stands to look over the edge, the Charizard is the first thing he can see. As for Adrian, well... He looked pretty fucked up. "...You still alive down there?"

Adrian can feel the shear winds tousling hair, some of it too slick with blood to be moved, instead growing cold and crusting against his increasingly pallid skin. A gently settling heartbeat pounds stubbornly, throbbing against the bite of every scrape and bruise, leaving him enfeebled. His hands clench against what should've been dirt, but he feels an eerily familiar sensation, one far more welcoming—and yet—[break][break]

Through the smear of bloodshot eyes, he can plainly see his body has settled against the dense coat of Howitzer's fur, fingers delicately tracing the identifying zig-zagging stripes of black-on-orange. His eyes feel hot, sweltering and puffing as he tries to nudge her roughly. Not so much as a flinch, her limp body doesn't budge from his touch, lying still against the cold earth. Meekly he clambers against her, despite being in disrepair. She gives off no signs; not even dog breath...[break][break]

I LET HER DIE... AGAIN...

Adrian experiences a pulsating, smoldering heat that throbs in tandem with the pain, his eyes shuttering themselves as he resigns himself to the guilt, to the blame... To the melancholy of a death he was more than deserving of... This would be the last time he let her down.[break][break]

Allowing his mind to drift away from its focus on the ephemeral world around them, Adrian would feel drawn to fond recollections of their journeys shared. The good and the bad, as they had endured them together... ...Let this be the last time I see this, then...[break][break]

...And yet, as the last light begins to flicker and fade, his physical form feels a sudden, shuddering jolt as Howitzer's body is wracked with a sudden coughing fit, and his beloved partner sputters to life. His eyes open to reveal a vibrant shade of amber as he perishes the most macabre of thoughts, and is rekindled by hope and joy...[break][break]

"...H—How could you do something so reckless?" He croaked to her, struggling to mouth the syllables. Though Adrian's tear streaked face trembled with fervor, the rueful grin was quite telling as he buried himself against the lively bundle of furry joy.[break][break]

There was a voice on the wind that he could not place, and a warmth to the air that grew despite how his deepening injuries drained his vigor, but in that moment he thought only of her. And he was happy.

It isn't for a few somber moments longer that Derek witnesses any attempt by Adrian to signal his life is still his own. And though they are 'enemies', there isn't much satisfaction in the current prospect of his passing...
